Food and drink in PMR

There are lots of places to eat in Pridnestrovie, from pizzerias to al fresco luncheons in open air biergartens. The food, reflecting the country's multiethnic character, is a mix of Russian, Ukrainian and Moldovan cuisine.

In Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia Respublica, McDonalds and Co haven't taken over yet. The most common eateries are old-fashioned canteen-like places, self-service establishments which are very cheap.

But for more formal dining, some of the perennial favorites are the "Restaurant Hunter" in Tiraspol and, also in Tiraspol, the Ukrainian restaurant “Kumanek”. Or try the nice "Café Eilenburg", named after one of Tiraspol's sister-cities in Germany. In Bender, the restaurant "Old Bender" is recommended. In Dubossary, "Restaurant Nistru", and in Rybnitsa the panoramic "Restaurant View" which overlooks the Dniester River.

Prices in Pridnestrovie are low. In canteens, you can have a basic and very filling lunch lunch for €1 for two persons.

Big beers
There are many small markets as well as some small groceries around, so it's also possible to buy your own food without bigger problems. Needless to say that prices are very low.

Pridnestrovie even produces its own beer - the local brand is called Старая Крепость (Staraya Krepost, meaning 'Old Fortress').
Old Fortress beer comes in all sizes, including a big 1.5 liter beer bottle for when you're really thirsty.

Many other drinks as well as processed food are imported from neighboring Ukraine. The local PMR-company Kvint with it's modern headquarters in Tiraspol produces wine and fine brandy and an excellent Pridnestrovian cognac. Kvint-Cognac is one of the famous export articles - especially in Russia and other CIS countries. In Pridnestrovie, a 10-years old Kvint costs just €4.
